Frost Elementary School Mosaic 2017

The Frost Elementary School Mosaic was created by 3rd and 4th grade students working with the artist and art teacher Anny Marion. Students made drawings including self portraits and images of flowers from their country of origin. On the right side, there is an image of the Statue of Liberty with students. The flame of liberty includes a quotation from President John F. Kennedy about the value of immigrants. On the left side, a Frost student is reading from Robert Frost's poem, "The Road Not Taken".

Habitats of Ipswich
   8 ft. X 36 ft.   Winthrop Elementary School, Ipswich MA    [Acrylic on Dibond Panels]
This student mural was created during a residency by all students in the school (grades K-4). The theme was the habitats of Ipswich, which included the Ipswich River, salt marshes, Crane's Beach, gardens, and forests, broken down by grade level. It is mounted on the outside of the school facing a brand new playground.

Further the Dream: the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Further the Dream is an exterior mural on panels with a contoured irregular top, that wraps around an entrance ramp to the school, next to a community playground. The mural design was created through 8 workshops with four students design teams from grades 5,6,7, and 8. The mural was painted by all students (K-8), along with parents and teachers in the King School and the King Open School during a 70 day residency. The theme of the mural is the life of Dr. King and the history of the Civil Rights movement.

Fletcher Maynard Academy Mosaics

The Fletcher Maynard Academy Mosaics were created during a residency in 2018. The Art Teacher Lolly Lincoln worked with her students from grades K-5 to create drawings based on the theme "Kids in Action". I wove the drawings together into two designs for spaces located on the outside of the school, flanking the doorway entrance. Students worked on the mosaics with us in the classroom over a 3 week period. Later they were installed on the outside. Artist Liane Noddin assisted in working with the students and the installation.

Trees and Their Eco-systems Through the Seasons (2014)

This is a mixed media mural at the entrance to Greenfield Elementary School in New Hampshire, combining glass tile and painted backgrounds created by students (K-4), teachers, parents and others. Each grade level focused their drawings on a different New Hampshire tree, with a large red oak being the center piece.The project was supported by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and the Greenfield PTO.

Growth Rings: The Ivan G. Smith Elementary School Mural 2014

The theme of this mural residency at the Smith Elementary School, was growth, change, and evolution in students and nature. The school is nestled on the edge of a wetlands nature preserve. Students made drawings about their school and their natural surroundings with the art teacher Laura Marotta. The artist wove these together into a mural design reflecting the idea of growth and change.

How Does Your Garden Grow - The Lawrence Elementary School Mural Project (2011)

This was a mural residency (grades K-8) based on the theme of gardens. It incorporated images drawn by students of gardens in different seasons, as well as images that reflect on the multi-cultural diversity of the students. The mural was installed by parents and staff on an exterior wall of the school as a backdrop to the school garden.

The Ward School Dolphin Murals

The Ward School Dolphin Murals are located on three walls of a stairway landing. There are six dolphins swimming and leaping up and around the stairs and each dolphin represents a different grade level. Images inside the dolphins were drawn by students in each grade level under the guidance of the school art teacher. The ocean is represented by wave like shapes created in glass mosaic. All of the cutouts are mounted on the walls painted by on a community paint day.

Sistene Chapel Murals at King Open School

"Sistene Chapel Murals at King Open" was a takeoff of Michelangelo's famous ceiling frescoes in Rome. The overall structure of the original was retained, but students made drawings of their teachers and students to substitute for the saints and other figures. They also worked in images and symbols representing their cultural backgrounds. In the middle, Martin Luther King Jr. presents the principal of the school with a paper with school values.

Visions of Community 2006

Visions of Community was designed and painted collaboratively with the King Open School Community. The mural was researched and designed by students from grades K-8. It explores the themes of labor and immigration, the African American community and women's history in Cambridge. In the center of the mural, students hold a banner that reads "The arc of history is long, but it bends towards justice" which is a quotation from Martin Luther King Jr. The King Open art teacher Kelly Mowers collaborated with me on directing the students in creating the mural.

"Growing Up At Lynch School" was created during a 20 day residency at the Lynch Elementary School in Winchester. Students in grades K-5 created drawings based on themes of school culture and I wove the drawings together into an overall design that connected with school activities at different grade levels. The completed mural was installed on the front of the school.

Building Peace, One Piece At A Time
      Antrim Elementary School, Antrim, New Hampshire    [Acrylic paint on canvas glued to wallboard.]
Building Peace One Piece At a Time was a collaboration with the students of the Antrim Elementary School. The overall design is based on a giant quilt being sewn together by the students and their teachers. Within the patches of the quilt are various images reflecting on the town of Antrim as well as social movements such as the Civil Rights movement that worked for peace.

World Feast

The mural design, created by core teams of students from grades 3-6, utilized the theme of food to connect periods of history and culture that were part of the social studies curriculum. The mural covered the entire back wall of the cafeteria/gym with a giant table which was also a timeline. People eating at the table represent early Native Americans, Americans during the colonial period, medieval Europeans, and immigrant cultures from different periods.

Bowen Elementary School Mural: The Big Dig

"The Big Dig Mural" was designed and painted for an exterior retaining wall at the back of the school. The concept was based on a cutaway view of the underground, which connected it to the mammoth undertaking of relocating a major highway through Boston to a tunnel beneath the city. The student design teams broke the theme into many sub themes such as underground animal habitats, caves, archaeology, underground transportation, fossils, etc. Through out the mural design were glimpses of the subway system. On one side of the mural subway cars travel underground and then emerge on the other side of the mural.

Story Garden Mural

The Story Garden Mural was an extremely detailed mural, that included the walls, benches, doors and ceilings that wrapped around the school library. The theme was an imaginary garden of stories come to life, based on various children's books, especially ones with a garden connection. The designs were created by students from grades K-5. The finished mural includes miniature doors and gates that actually open, revealing tiny storybook scenes, making the mural interactive.

Love of Learning

Love of Learning-A Community of Learners was the first of two large murals the artist created with the students of this school.
The artist worked with several design teams of older students (4th and 5th grades) who brainstormed the theme of learning and developed the designs. All students in the school participated in the painting. The mural wall is located in the gym.

Building Bridges-The Millennium Mural was created in 2000 with the students and staff of the Bridge Elementary School. The theme of building bridges was broken down into 7 sub-themes each of which filled a separate niche on the front of the school. The sub-themes were: bridges to learning, to the town of Lexington, to Boston, to history, to art, to nature, science and the future. There was also a bridge of friendship created by kindergarteners.

The "Seasons of Mashpee" murals were created by 4th graders at the Kenneth Coombs School. The four murals depict the cultural and environmental heritage of Mashpee and the Wampanoag Tribe of Native Americans. The panels were installed in the cafeteria of this new school.

Martin Elementary School Murals 1998

The theme of the student mural in the cafeteria of the Martin Elementary School was a journey through the history of the town of North Attleboro. It begins on one side of the cafeteria during the age of dinosaurs and then follows a roller coaster journey up to the present. The idea for the roller coaster journey through time was developed by core groups of student designers. During a second residency the next year, students designed and painted a long mural for the hallway of the school based on the theme of Martin School culture and activities.

The Chandler School Mural was drawn and painted by students from grades K through 5 during a school residency. Core teams created the design and all students in the school painted. The theme was focused on local history and includes images of Native Americans and shipbuilding.

Visions of Community Mural Project 1994

This project was conceived by the Needham Creative Arts Council in conjunction with the Needham Schools Dept. of Fine and Performing arts. Every elementary school in the system created their own mural based on the common theme of "Visions of Community". Participating schools included: Broadmeadow, John Eliot, Hillside, William Mitchell, Newman, and St. Joseph's. A year later Pollard Middle School also did a mural. I worked with each school to create their own design, project it onto a wall or panels and then begin the painting process over a three month period. It was wonderful to see how each school uniquely interpreted the common theme.

Frost School Murals, Lawrence MA
      Frost School, Lawrence MA    [Acrylic paint on canvas panels]
In 1987 and 1988, the artist was an artist-in-resident at the Frost School in Lawrence, MA. Students (7th and 8th grade) created a mural titled "Lawrence: Yesterday and Today" on stretched canvas panels about the rich immigrant history of the city of Lawrence. The mural was temporarily exhibited at the Lawrence Heritage State Park Visitors Center. During the 2nd year residency, 4th grade students created a mural based on the poetry of school namesake Robert Frost, who lived in Lawrence. Older students interpreted the poetry of Garcia Lorca and Pablo Neruda into another mural.

Earth Journey 1992

At the Claypit Hill Elementary School in Wayland (funded by the Mass. Cultural Council) I direct core groups of 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in developing designs for three wall on the theme of an "Earth Journey". All the students in the school (K-5) participated in painting the murals on walls in the cafeteria, the lobby and hallways of the school.
