A School Grows On Thorndyke Road
12 ft. X45 ft.   Thorndyke Road School, Worcester MA    [Acrylic on Brick]
The Thorndyke Road School opened in May 1927. In 2003 the school commissioned me to design and paint a mural about the history of the school since it opened. I decided to use the metaphor of a tree planted, which grew over the decades into a full scale tree on the wall of the cafeteria. During each decade, I depicted images of students in the school combined with historical figures and events from the history of Worcester and the country. Some of the prominent figures depicted includes Robert Goddard who successfully launched a rocket from a nearby hill in 1926 and Francis Perkins of Worcester, the first female cabinet member who served as FDR's secretary of labor.

Shrewsbury High School Colonials
10 ft. X 20 ft.   Shrewsbury High School, Shrewsbury MA    [acrylic on wall]
The Shrewsbury High School Colonial Mural was designed and painted collaboratively by David Fichter and Joshua Winer. It was the gift of the Shrewsbury High Class of 2013 as a representation of class spirit and unity. It represents the colonial themes which are the symbol and mascot of the school through portraits of historical figures. General Artemas Ward was from Shrewsbury and was commander of the Massachusetts militia at the Battle of Bunker Hill and was later second in command of the Continental Army. Phillis Wheatley was an African American poet in Boston during the American Revolution. Abigail Adams (wife of John Adams) was an outspoken advocate of women's rights during the colonial times.
